Congressman John Rutherford (R-FL) calls his work in law enforcement, which spanned decades, his “life’s calling.” The Florida Republican has introduced a slew of bipartisan legislation regarding law enforcement, such as the HELPER Act, the Protect and Serve Act, and the Invest to Protect Act. Rutherford claims working with Democrats on these bills hasn’t “been by chance.”
When he first got to Congress, he tells Forbes he was struck by how Washington D.C. seems like it is “designed” to keep Democrats and Republicans apart, and was determined to work across the aisle.
“I have not introduced a single bill that I wasn’t able to get a Democrat to be a primary cosponsor,” says Rutherford, aside from his Red Snapper Act that he introduced earlier this month. He credits that bipartisanship as “the reason for some of our success in getting bills passed.”
